During 1988, while working as Savant Fellow in Computing at Lancaster University, I finalised plans for the founding of a knowledge engineering consultancy, based on our theoretical work. This project involved Peter Mott and a number of other ex-students of Motts. In the November, after the completion of my fellowship year, I concentrated full time on this project, which was incorporated as Common Knowledge Ltd in February of 1989. I was elected Managing Director.
Common Knowledge's clients included: ACT, Bull HN Information Systems, CMB, Courtaulds, the Department of the Environment, the Department of Social Security, Ford Motor Company, ICI, NCR, Whitbread, and a number of smaller organisations. My own direct responsibility included the company's work with Courtaulds, Department of the Environment, Department of Social Security, NCR, Whitbread, and other clients. I also took responsibility for the continuing development of The KnAcq[TM] methodology and for the design and development of the KnAcqTools[TM] CASE tool. In working with clients I had responsibility for the design and development of a number of commercial Expert Systems.
The KnAcq was adopted as a standard knowledge elicitation methodology by the majority of the clients listed.
In Spring of 1992, Common Knowledge's trading position had deteriorated, due primarily to recession in the economy. Consequently, I proposed that the Company be wound up to avoid the risk of trading whilst insolvent.
